Local Materials

Mother of Pearl

Mother of pearl is produced from locally farmed oyster shell. It is painstakingly prepared, ground and polished to a beautiful lustre - cut by hand and combined with either sterling silver, gold plate or gold, and a variety of African gemstones.

See our Jewellery Collection.

Bag Fittings

Bag fittings are handmade from local materials and available in either wood, cow horn (as featured) or mother of pearl, prepared and cut out by hand.

Leather

Leather is tanned and dyed locally to our colour specifications and available in either leather or suede finish.

Ukili - Ukindu

Ukili - Ukindu (local palm leaf) is dried, dyed and plaited or woven to form strips known as ukili and is a craft which goes back through the generations, unique to the East Coast of Africa.

It is dyed by hand, colour permutations are endless and unique but we can never guarantee you will have the exact same colour again.

Kitenge

A selection of Kitenge - highly patterned local African fabrics - are used to make colourful bags and to line all of our products. However, waterproof linings are used where appropriate.

Kitenge prints vary from season to season and we may not be able to supply the fabrics pictured.

Gemstones & Beads

Gemstones - semi precious African stones enhance the mother of pearl, silver jewellery and our evening bags, making them something to treasure. Aqua marines, Citrine, Smoky Quartz, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Cornelian...

Beads - colourful hand painted ceramic, recycled glass, wood, bone or cow horn beads used as embellishment or on zip pullers.
